Cleveland Apartments

Cleveland, heart of the largest metropolitan area in Ohio, is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, where the Cuyahoga River enters the lake. It is a chief port on the Great lakes and a major midwest industrial center, as well as an important trade and transportation center. Though city population has declined in recent years, the metropolitan population now exceeds 2,225,000. Cleveland’s balanced economy is based on manufacturing, diversified business services, high technology, and tourism. It is the home of the Lewis Research Center of NASA.

Most of the northern and downtown areas are built on terraces above Lake Erie, and these terraces are divided by the Cuyahoga River valley. The business and residential sections are linked by high bridges. The central commercial district is in Public Square, where the most prominent landmark is the 52-story Terminal Tower, formerly the tallest building in the United States west of New York City. Today the Tower’s lower concourse is an open three-level retail complex called Tower City. The University Circle area is a concentration of educational, cultural, and medical facilities, The city is famous for medical research and treatment.

Notable points of interest are the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Western Reserve Historical Society Museum, Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame and Cleveland Children’s Museum. Severance Hall is the site of the cities famous symphony orchestra. It is a city blessed with a variety of professional sports: the Indians baseball, the Cavaliers basketball, and the Browns football. Annual events: International Film Festival, National Air Show, and Grand Prix automobile race.

In 1796 the land was acquired by Moses Cleaveland who laid out the present-day city east of the Cuyahoga River. A prominent shipbuilding center during the War of 1812, it was incorporated as a village in 1814, and as a city in 1836. Completion of the Erie Canal in 1832 changed the city from a frontier town to a bustling commercial center on the trade route between the midwest and the major urban communities. Because of its rich iron and coal reserves, there was a great demand for iron and steel products during the Civil War. This stimulated the city’s growth and converted this city into one of America’s key industrial states and, for awhile, a major automotive manufacturer.
